亨德尔和《弥赛亚》

1685年2月23日，亨德尔出生在德国中部的哈雷镇。与他伟大的同龄人巴赫不同的是，他的家庭并没有多少音乐气息：父亲是一个理发师兼外科医生，认为音乐是卑贱的职业（在当时的保护人制度下，音乐家只能算是有技艺的仆人）。但天生喜爱音乐的小亨德尔不顾父亲的反对，偷偷的练习弹古钢琴。亨德尔就是在这样充满矛盾的逆境中度过了他的童年。
后来，当地的萨克森－魏森斯菲尔大公偶然发现了小亨德尔练琴并深深为他的毅力和天分所感动，于是出面说服了老亨德尔同意他天才的儿子认真的学音乐。此后的几年中，亨德尔随作曲家、风琴演奏家查豪学习了键盘乐器和作曲，也学会了演奏双簧管和小提琴。凭著过人的天资和名师的指教，小亨德尔进步的很快。
1697年老亨德尔去世时，念念不忘要让儿子作一个律师而不要去搞什么音乐。亨德尔并没有因此放弃他的艺术追求。1702年，他先进入哈雷大学学习法律，算是不违父命，同时又在当地的教堂里担任兼职管风琴师。
十八岁是成家立业的年龄－1703年，亨德尔正式开始了他的音乐生涯，只身远行到汉堡，在歌剧院里当了一个小提琴手（巴赫也是在这一年开始了管风琴师的职业）。亨德尔的才华不久就引起了一些艺术赞助人的注意，他们中有些人打算拿出钱来供年轻的亨德尔去意大利学习歌剧和作曲（当然不是无偿的，学成后要回来为他们服务）。抱负远大的亨德尔婉言谢绝了这些赞助：他要凭自己的努力挣足学费去留学，不能把自己的前途卖给别人。
1705年，亨德尔创作的歌剧《阿尔米拉》的上演获得了成功，使他得以踏上留学的旅程。在当时意大利是全欧洲歌剧艺术的圣地。亨德尔越过阿尔卑斯山，在那不勒斯、罗马、佛罗仑萨和威尼斯等地学习了三年，同斯卡拉蒂和科雷利等大师都有交往，把意大利的歌剧艺术学到了手。
学成归国的亨德尔在德国处处受到欢迎。1710年，这个25岁的年轻人就任汉诺威选帝侯的宫廷乐长。他并没有满足于这个不错的差事，而是把眼光放到了海外。当时的英国比德国富裕得多，歌剧艺术在那里也更受欢迎。但自从普赛尔1695年逝世后，英国的歌剧艺术就止步不前，需要新鲜的血液。亨德尔看准了这个机遇，就向主人请了一年的假，渡海去了英国，此后几年亨德尔就往返于英德之间。他的到来给沉闷的英国歌剧界带来了一股清风，在伦敦他的歌剧《里纳尔多》大获成功，1713年他以一首《女王生日颂歌》博得了安妮女王的赏识，于是亨德尔索性就不回汉诺威了。
命运捉弄了这位开了小差的宫廷乐长：1714年没有子女的安妮女王驾崩，亨德尔的“老领导”汉诺威选帝侯乔治以英王亲戚的身份继承了英国王位，亨德尔恐怕要遭殃了。可他镇定自若，以一部精心创作的《水上音乐》欢迎了新国王乔治。国王对乐曲的华贵典雅赞叹不已，问这是何人所作。当得知作者是老部下亨德尔时，不仅原谅了他的旧过，还当即增加了他的年薪。
此后的十余年时间里，亨德尔创作了大量的声乐和器乐作品，特别是歌剧，这为他在全欧洲赢得了巨大的声誉；他也是举世公认的管风琴大师，在当时也只有巴赫才可与他匹敌。但从十八世纪二十年代后期开始，原来盛行的意大利语歌剧在英国开始衰落。1729年由普佩什作曲的一部名叫《乞丐的歌剧》的喜歌剧在伦敦上演。此剧采用英语对白，取材于市民阶层的日常生活。该剧上演后大受好评，传统的意大利歌剧相比之下显出了严重的弊端：用意大利语演唱限制了英国听众的理解；神话故事、贵族恩怨等等题材也不能引起新兴市民阶层的兴趣。作者通过此剧对亨德尔和他的意大利正歌剧作了无情的讽刺。当一群盗贼上台时，响起的音乐竟然是亨德尔在英国的成名作《里纳尔多》中的《十字军进行曲》！
靠意大利正歌剧起家的亨德尔的地位受到了前所未有的冲击。他的几部歌剧上演相继遭到失败，最终他经营的歌剧院被迫关闭。嫉妒他的政敌趁机制造各种流言蜚语……1737年，内外交困的亨德尔中风偏瘫，人们以为他的音乐生涯完了。
这一年的7月，当他收到好友詹氏寄给他的三本脚本，即「扫罗王」、「弥赛亚」及「伯沙撒」。亨德尔很感激詹氏，也回信表示一定会好好地研究这些脚本。虽然他并未马上著手写曲，但是很显然地，「弥赛亚」的脚本在亨德尔潦倒的生活中，渐渐地成为他的灵修圣品。到了1741年8月22日，终于受到极大的感动而开始写出令人耳目一新而又感人至深的旷世杰作。此后，亨德尔封笔不再写歌剧，而只写清唱剧。直到去世时，一共再写了17首清唱剧，其中包括：「参孙」、「约瑟」、「犹大马加比亚斯」、「约书亚」、「所罗门王」及「耶弗他」等，这是亨德尔心灵可贵的转变。
从他的经历，似乎也告诉我们，在人生的旅程当中，「失败」并不一定是负面的，亨德尔歌剧事业的失败，似乎使他转眼仰望上帝的慰藉，也重新忆起自己年轻时写教会音乐的热情；而詹氏的「弥赛亚」剧本，就像是「及时雨」，使亨德尔的心田及时获得滋润。以前或许未对救主「弥赛亚」的真义了解透澈的亨德尔，现在得到了詹氏的帮助，深深体会到「救主」的真实性；而当他感动之余，流畅的乐笔源源不断谱出圣乐；当中许多写作的技巧，实在也是得力于以前不断写歌剧的磨练。这又让我们了解到：基督徒的人生不一定都是顺遂的，重要的是能记取「失败」的经验，转眼向上帝重新得力，而后重新起步为他而活。
亨德尔在1741年8月22日（星期六）下午开始写作「弥赛亚」，6天之内便完成了第一部份，9月6日完成第二部份，9月12日完成整曲的架构，然后写了管弦乐部份并加修整，前后一共只花了24天，那是惊人的快速也是充满灵感的。据闻亨德尔在写作之中常常被感动得泪流满面，泪水浸湿了手稿。尤其当他写到「哈利路亚」大合唱时，曾双膝跪倒在地，双手向天，喊著说：「我看到天门开了」。亨德尔在感动之余，原本希望藉此赚点钱的念头也打消了，1742年在都柏林首演时，海报上写著：「为了一些困苦的囚犯，以及梅尔舍医院的利益」而演出。在3月27日预演时，大家都非常感动，为了达到慈善演奏的最高效果（希望多些人入座），宣传单上注明妇女们不穿蓬裙、男人不佩剑。4月13日首演果然引起轰动。
消息传到伦敦，人们纷纷要求一睹为快。次年在伦敦上演时英王乔治二世亲临剧院，当第二部分终曲《哈里路亚》奏响时，国王按捺不住心中的激动，站起来听完了全曲（《哈里路亚》要站着听作为一条不成文的规定一直延续到今天）。为了维护《弥赛亚》的地位不因过多的演奏而受损，英王下旨每年只在春天演奏一次，且只有亨德尔本人才有资格指挥。
亨德尔的清唱剧质朴感人，把高度的艺术性和虔诚的宗教信仰融入了一个个音符之中。从《扫罗》、《以色列人在埃及》到《参孙》都同样出色。1750年（巴赫在这年逝世），年迈的亨德尔在车祸中受了伤，第二年他的视力开始减退，不久完全失明。他依然拖著病体参加各种社会活动，包括每年春天指挥《弥赛亚》的演出。
1759年春，74岁的大师照例指挥了演出，在暴风雨般的掌声中，老人倒下了。几天以后，这位乐坛上的巨星陨落了。亨德尔享受了国葬的待遇，长眠在历代国王圣贤下葬的威斯敏斯特教堂墓地，在那里有一座亨德尔纪念像耸立至今。
回顾亨德尔的一生，他确实是乐坛上的常青树和多面手：他一生近60年的音乐生涯中，在德、英、意三国乃至全欧洲都获得了巨大的声誉；他的作品融德国严谨的对位法、意大利的独唱艺术和英国的合唱传统于一炉，成为世界音乐史上的瑰宝。他同巴赫、维瓦尔第一起，为辉煌的巴罗克时代画上了一个圆满的句号。
亨德尔的清唱剧创作
他的清唱剧创作远从1708年即开始，一生约有两打作品，除了两首以意大利文写作之外，其他都以英文的脚本为依据。取材大多出自圣经。如：以斯帖、底波拉、扫罗王、以色列人在埃及、约书亚、参孙、所罗门王、耶弗他、犹大马加比亚斯等，最后一首是譬喻式的
(Allegorical)「时间与真理的胜利」（The Triumph of Time and Truth）(1757年)。至于「弥赛亚」却是独树一格的作品，是一首包含了旧约及新约，注重灵修、思考有关救主「弥赛亚」的作品。
亨德尔的「弥赛亚」可说是全世界被演唱最多的清唱剧（包括以英文及其他许多语言，当然英文唱的最多），也是基督徒耳熟能详的圣乐；其中之「Alleluia」大合唱，更是许多大大小小的合唱团、圣歌队唱过或试著去唱，许多人都能「倒背如流」的曲子。而演出的人数，首演时有18人诗班（6位男童女高音，12位男性演唱者中有4位唱女低音、4位男高音、
4位男低音），共使用了33件乐器──12支小提琴、 4支中提琴、 3支大提琴、2支低音大提琴、4支双簧管、4支巴松管、2支小喇叭、1组定音鼓、1架管风琴。
这是1742年4月13日在爱尔兰首都都柏林首演的编制。而莫札特在1789年重编的乐谱，使后来演出的人数大增，同年在伦敦就有275
位人声及248件乐器的记录。而1859年在伦敦的亨德尔100年逝世纪念会时，合唱团高达 2765人、乐器460件。1869年在美国波士顿「和平日节庆」演出时，更曾有过一万人大合唱「Alleluia」、500件乐器伴奏的记录。在台湾YMCA的Oratorio
Chorus每年连续不断地于12月间推出，今年将是第50周年的演出，「弥赛亚」受欢迎的程度于此可见一斑。此外甚至有所谓的「弥赛亚大合唱节庆」，就如在美国普林斯顿的西敏寺音乐学院，常常邀请普林斯顿附近的居民，自备乐谱参加大合唱，英国的伦敦也常有此盛况，人数有时多达2000人。
当然，世上有许多贫穷的人，也因著「弥赛亚」的演出而多少获得些帮助，许多医院更因而被建造或改建。世界上各个角落每年都有人因为唱「弥赛亚」而获得心灵上的鼓舞，产生更多向上迈进的力量。许多基督徒因为听了它而更爱主、爱人。也有不少非基督徒（特别是大专院校的合唱团员）因为参与了「弥赛亚」的演出而深受感动，决心追求真理、用音乐服事世人；福音的种子撒播在各种数不尽的，唱过、听过「Messiah」的人心田之中，任何适当的时期，都可能发芽开花而结果。
清唱剧弥赛亚的写作背景
剧本的作者查理·詹宁斯（Mr. Jenmens 1700～1773）是伦敦当时相当富有的人，他以写文章及剧本为至高之乐趣，并充满达到顶尖的雄心。他自认是当时最杰出的剧作能手，饱读莎士比亚的剧作，对于许多古典文学作品也涉猎广泛。亨德尔在1725
年开始与他成为好友，发现詹氏对他的音乐了解至深而相当惊讶，后来就采用了詹氏的脚本写清唱剧，如「扫罗王」及「伯沙撒王」等，而「弥赛亚」则是詹氏心目中精心的作品，不过，他大概做梦也没有想到它会成为万世留芳的脚本（甚至有人曾说它是「前古无人，后无来者」的杰作），与亨德尔同被歌颂，永不褪色。
「弥赛亚」的剧本共分成三大部分：
救主降临的预言及他的诞生。
救赎的信息及救主为全人类的牺牲。
救主战胜死亡及最终的审判。
全曲主要精神虽然注重救赎的信息，却超越了教会的教义，成为一种非礼仪的圣乐，而向全世界人类传达救恩的喜讯。亨德尔本身似乎完全了解信息的中心，而能时常在音乐中用最简单的方式，将严肃的信息表达出来。
它的内容澈头澈尾取材于圣经，以《以赛亚》书为重心，诗篇、福音书及书信为辅佐，约伯记及小先知书（哈该书、撒迦利亚、玛拉基书）则适当地穿插其中，却能有一贯的精神，它实在不是圣经的选辑而已。詹氏采撷圣经资料的广博及其一贯性，证明了他本身对于救世主、「弥赛亚」的神学及福音深入了解的成熟度。
这首清唱剧不象别的清唱剧那样可清楚地让人看出主角何时出现，但「弥赛亚」的中心思想却贯穿了全曲，而成为亨德尔的清唱剧作品中最特殊的一曲。它是一首颂赞救主耶稣基督整个生涯的作品，从旧约圣经的预言，到主耶稣的出生、生活、受难、受死及复活，以及荣耀的复临，使我们清楚认识了整曲的一贯性。
到亨德尔去世时，一共演出56场。1750年5月1日在伦敦更是演出最成功的一场，而奠定了「弥赛亚」清唱剧在圣乐史、音乐史上的永久地位。
亨德尔在写作「弥赛亚」时，似乎已经亲身看见、亲手触摸到救世主，而他的生命至此全然改变，我们可从他1757年所写的「时间与真理」，体会出他成熟的宗教情操──他不再急功好利，他开始追求人生真实的意义。从此以后，亨德尔好像与巴哈携手并进，从心底写出对至高上主的赞美与感谢，将一切的荣耀归与真神上帝。也惟有这样伟大的心灵，才能谱出感人至深的音乐，为许多世上迷途的人们指点迷津，照亮了他们人生的旅途。
